Hello! Welcome back! Just to say you may not know this but due to all the disruption caused by trying to keep Covid infections at bay this years’ West Berkshire and North Hampshire Open Studios has been split into Two Parts this year. The first part was run during May and was something of a trial run for the Part Two which is running from 18thSeptember to the 10th October 2021, which also has its usual Insight Exhibition, which wasn’t possible to hold in May; that is to say, it’s on now! and Michael is participating by holding his Open Studios event on Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd, and Monday 4th at Studio 21, 21 Patrick Road RG4 8DD,  and you will be made to feel very welcome when you visit between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. every day, and also by appointment via his Open Studios web site page https://www.open-studios.org.uk/entry/2021/michael-norcross

Or you can follow him on www.instagram.com/michael.norcross/ twitter.com/mikenorcrossart

The Base

Communications Rd.,

Greenham Business Park

Thatcham

RG19 6HN

Situated within Greenham Business Park off the A339 just south of Newbury.

We closed at 5.30pm today and many thanks to all those who visited.
I have an update on the mystery of the red poppies appearing all over Caversham. We went out for a walk this evening and saw even more poppies attached to the railings of Christchurh meadows along Gosbrook road. According to the people we met and spoke to tonight, who were also looking at the Poppies, apparently it was the idea of a pupil at Highdown School in year seven, not sure whether this is correct but here is the link.

Sgt/Major William Brant.

Thank you for visiting our studio for the past couple of days.
Last night whilst we were busy talking to some visitors, someone tied a red poppy to the post outside our house. It was tied on the post just as it was getting dark. We would like to thank that person. It was placed in remembrance of company Sergeant Major William Brant of the Royal Berkshire regiment. He died on the 25th April 1917 aged 35. He was the brother of Mrs E Howe, who used to live at our house. For a few years we used to receive Christmas cards for Mrs Howe. I could never return to sender as there was no address, they stopped after a few years.
Her brother was awarded, by the French government, the medal of the Croix de Guerre. The Croix de Guerre may either be awarded as an individual or unit award, to those soldiers who distinguish themselves by acts of heroism involving combat with the enemy. The medal is awarded to those who have been "mentioned in dispatches", meaning a heroic deed or deeds were performed meriting a citation from an individual's headquarters unit. The unit award of the Croix de Guerre with palm was issued to military units whose members performed heroic deeds in combat and were subsequently recognized by headquarters.
He was decorated with the Croix de Guerre for bravery and resourcefulness at Loos. His company took a position, but all the officers fell. Brant rallied the remainder of his company, who held the trench till victory was secured.
I managed to find a photograph of William Brant along side his company. (Reading Library) See below bottom left hand corner.
